Here is an e-mail that my wife sent to
    Bryan Williams
        of MSNBC Nightly News:

A friend of ours had a son stationed in Iraq.
The first time the son had to kill someone,
he wrote home to his Dad and expressed
                        his concern about breaking
                            the ultimate commandment,
Thou shall not KILL.
His Dad knew that my husband,
having a PhD in religion, would have the answer
            for his son.
                And he did.

My husbands pet peeve has always been the incorrect
    translations of the Bible
as well as the misusage of words.
One of these mistranslations being the change
                of the original commandment of
Thou shall not MURDER;
    to Thou Shall Not KILL.
And the difference in the meaning of these two
words can make the difference between a
soldier feeling as if he has served
                    his country or
like he has done something against G-d
that he will pay for in Hell.
And feel so much guilt that he takes his own life.
My husband helped his Dad compose a letter
                explaining this error in translation
                    and explained the definition of
                        both words:
To Kill is to take another life for survival,
in self defense, as an execution for a crime,
or to protect your family or another person
            or country.

To Murder is to take another life
     for materialistic gain,
         i.e., financially, for self-promotion
             in some other way or
just because the perpetrator wants to
                     (for fun).
When this boy in Iraq received this letter
he wrote home thanking his Dad for
        making him understand
that what he had to do was to kill...
                NOT murder.
And that the original Bible does not condemn killing.
His son shared the letter with his platoon
and raised the spirits of all his comrades,
           who had also been misled
by the incorrect use of THAT one little word.

I think that if these two words were explained
to the soldiers in boot camp,
along with verification of the commandments
by having a Bible accessible to them
                that correctly indicates the actual
                    translation of the Ten commandments,
                        "Thou Shall Not Murder"
that there would be far fewer suicides by soldiers
    in combat
        and after they get home.

G-d bless the soldiers.
Love Susi

To see an example of
    the importance of words
        see the Rabbi's concern over
            the words Kill and murder
as it was misused by the pope.
The word "kill" implies that the deaths were for one reason or another deserved
as in the the executioner "Killed", the "murderer".
(in the video below, its about midway through).
This is a matter of Philology
         NOT semantics!
            But Misnomers!

Then listen to the Rabbi
on my tv show interview "Part 6"
(the next video after the pope),
            explain that the
                commandment is against "murder"
                    not against "Kill".

Then check out my other definitions
on my "What is a Definary?" page
           (its the next page over)
               of this site.
